WEALTH: Post-Doctoral Researcher in Machine Learning for Physical Activity Recognition

Jun 17, 2022 | Postdoc

The Project:

WEALTH (Wearable sensor assessment of physical and eating behaviours) is a European collaboration funded under the Joint Programme Initiative “Healthy Diet Healthy Life.  The project consortium is led by Professor Alan Donnelly and colleagues at the University of Limerick, Ireland.  Partners are located in Cork (Ireland), Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany and France.  The WEALTH project aims to develop methods for combined measurement of physical and eating behaviours; this post doc will focus on physical behaviours.  Method development will utilise Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA; questions in real time through a phone-based app triggered by behaviours) to identify physical behaviours in free living participants.  This data will be employed to develop machine learning models to identify those behaviours in recorded accelerometer data.

The Post-Doc

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to work on machine learning models to recognise specific physical activities.  The post doc will assist in the development of a suite of machine learning models to accurately recognize a number of physical activities from body-worn sensors for a number of wearable sensors, and also to predict energy expenditure from those sensors.  The post-doc will also help develop a web tool that allows the research community to upload raw datasets from a number of commercially available sensors and process this data to obtain predictions of physical activity and energy expenditure.   The post doc will be supervised by Dr Pepijn Van de Ven (Machine Learning) and Prof Alan Donnelly (physical activity measurement) from the University of Limerick, and will be based in the Physical Activity for Health Research Cluster in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick.

Potential candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Pepijn van de Ven () or Prof Alan Donnelly ).  The successful applicant will be paid on the Irish post-doctoral Salary Scale: €39,523 – €51,035 p.a.  Further information for applicants and application material is available online from: http://www.ul.ie/hrvacancies/

The closing date for receipt of applications is Monday, 4th July 2022. (12 noon Irish time)
